My Teaching Philosophy
It is my mission as a teacher to promote the love of music and music-making. Students who enjoy the aesthetics of music, experience the physical sensations of playing, and sense accomplishment in piano study are motivated to continue learning and further their love of music.
I believe that helping students enjoy the learning process sets the tone for successful piano study. When a student learns how to solve a technical problem, they will be motivated to continue practicing. I believe that experimenting at the keyboard to make music, both student and teacher together, is as much a part of the learning process as perfecting and performing pieces.
Students will learn concepts and skills that are necessary to continue playing as adults. This includes sufficient aural, reading and keyboard skills that encourage independent learning and musical self-reliance.
Respecting a student’s individuality and recognizing a student’s potential are as important to me as the music itself. All students are different, and their needs and desires change as they progress. Building upon my past experience I will do my absolute best to identify individual strengths and limitations for each student, and assign appropriate materials and tasks to help them reach their full potential.
Lastly, I understand and appreciate the fact that I will serve as a role model for my students. I have an opportunity and obligation to share the gift of music with others, and I intend to be a source of inspiration and guidance to every student with whom I have the pleasure of teaching.
